Babis wasn’t all that surprised to hear that his suspicions about Spiro not being around dogs before were right. “There’s a lot of strays around here. Some of them are friendlier than others.” Babis said with a small shrug as he dropped the man’s wrist. If Spiro didn’t want to risk losing his fingers again, then maybe he should spend time with a few of them who weren’t trained to attack if someone untrustworthy got a bit too close… Plus it also didn’t hurt that Vang was scary while some of the strays weren’t if Spiro had a bit of a fear of dogs after this, it would do him well to have some positive experiences with more friendly canines.
There was just something off about the man. Babis couldn’t tell just what it was, but for some reason, he refused to give Vang the signal to trust this dude. That within itself was strange as Spiro really hadn’t done anything to warrant the boy’s suspicions. In fact, the man had been nothing, but kind to the angry boy who had run into him and here Babis was, keeping his guard dog on edge without a just cause as to why.
Though maybe it was the friendliness that was causing the boy to be wary of Spiro. Babis may be a child, but he was still a member of the upper classes and this silly outfit his mother had coerced him into wearing clearly marked him as such. Normally, those who weren’t a member of the royal family like he was -- albeit he was so distantly related to the Colchian crown that he had a higher place in the Taengean line of succession -- treated people like Babis a bit differently than Spiro had done thus far, even if they didn’t know if Babis was a member of a Varanos or a Dynestia. Plus not to mention, there was the extra factor of Babis being a child as well. People tended to treat him just a bit differently than an adult… but not Spiro. That was the thing that was setting him on edge. Spiro was treating Babis as if he was equal in terms of rank and age, which was not simply the case.
It was frankly just a bit weird to the boy as he wasn’t used to it.
That strangeness factor was solidified though when Spiro immediately responded to the boy’s question with the same one but directed towards the child. Babis glanced over at Spiro with a wary expression, confused as to why someone would purposely try to hide his name from a kid, which is what the man’s deflection sounded like. There was no reason as to why on earth he would need to do that? Was Spiro a criminal? That was the only logical explanation that Babis could think of if he didn’t want a kid to know his name.
Glancing over his shoulder in the direction he came from, Babis decided that this was just a bit too strange for him and he really didn’t want to know whether or not Spiro was his real name. Especially not when he still needed to hurry and replace the food that Vang had eaten. So, quickly, he gathered up the leash as he lied straight through his teeth in response to what would be their parting question, “Aras” This wasn’t the young lord’s name, of course. He was too weirded out by this man to tell him what it really was. When he spoke, there was no hesitation in his voice and no other indication that this wasn’t the twin’s name. That was one of the bonuses of being an identical twin. You knew how to pass yourself off as the other at a moment’s notice. It was unlikely that Spiro would be any wiser about the trick this little imp had played, not unless the man actually knew who the twins were and knew them well enough to know that Vang normally stayed with Babis instead of the heir.
“Nice to meet you too.” Babis parroted back, bouncing on the edge of his feet, eager and ready to dash off. It only took a moment of silence from the pair for the young boy to quickly say, “Sorry, but I have to go find something.” The words tumbled out of his mouth just as quickly as his sandals when he was running, but the message itself was short, simple, and straight to the point. Then, without another word, Babis turned on his heels, tugged lightly on Vang’s collar and bounded off in the opposite direction, back from where he came, fully intent finding the bread he needed to replace what Vang stole earlier.
Maybe with a little luck, he might also run into his brother who might be able to use that big brain of his and figure out what just happened.
