Athenia occupies the southwestern area of the Grecian realm. The capital city and its surrounding provinces are situated on a high cliffside, on a piece of mainland Europe known as the Lands of Ire. Its coastline stretches out into the Aegean as three long fingers creating three distinctive bays: two occupying the space between each cape and the third sitting the southernmost curve of the Athenian border. The land itself is incredibly flat with an average altitude and about a hundred feet above sea-level. Athenian weather is hot and sultry - especially in the provinces - but the capitol enjoys a strong breeze off of the Aegean Sea. Every fall, Athenia suffers through a rainy season where the weather turns blustery and storm clouds break over the highest altitude points in the landscape to cause torrential rainfall. This wet weather only lasts a few weeks and is necessary to ensure the growth of the fruit trees and bushes that are Athenia's mainland produce.
In terms of trade, Athenians are generally skilled crafters, their ethos of hard-work and application leading to fine masteries of almost any product or art. Most of the kingdom's exports in such fields are made within the capital city; from pots and ceramics to fabrics and textiles. Meanwhile, in the outer lands, Athenia holds vast fields in which crops and raw resources can be grown and extricated, meaning that Athenia is almost entirely self-sufficient in wood, stone, food and livestock. Another large export for the kingdom is fish of all kinds, as their immense bays and the reefs in the surrounding areas give them access to the wider sea and the wildlife beyond.
As a people, Athenians hold with practicality, pragmatism, perfectionism and dignity. They are often thought to be a little aloof or stand-offish, or even arrogant in their careful thinking and stoicism. Athenian's believe in work and the way that toil reflects on the honour of one's House and name. In general, they are intelligent, academic, honour-bound, prideful and obsessed with social image. This, however, does not make them cold-hearted. Athenians believe in welcoming and looking after their guests. They are also honour-bound to help strangers or travellers, if they need it; to turn them away would be to bring disgrace on the family. Sometimes this can be seen as a duty, sometimes a chore, depending on the individual.
With regards to politics. The Athenians rate as some of the most clever politicians in the Grecian realm. Academics and scholars, they are cunning plotters and schemers and will normally trap their political opponents in logical argument or trade deals, long before any blood is spilt. This, however, is the general rule and there are always the more ambitious exceptions.
As they believe themselves painted in the image of the Gods, Athenians are highly considerate of their appearance. The lower classes are far cleaner and more carefully kept than in other kingdoms and the upper classes are impressive in their choice of garments and jewellery without being gauche or excessive. Elegance is key to the manner of Athenian appearance. So too can it be said for their manner of communication. Athenians speak in verbose and educated language or in clipped, articulate statements. Their type of verbal address can come across as arrogant or superior but never impatient or inattentive.
The Athenian way of life boils down to honour, dignity, loyalty to name over blood, perfectionism and personal discipline and control. Stereotypically, in other kingdoms, Athenians can be seen as arrogant, cold, aloof, old fashioned and nit-pickers; taking far too long to make changes or decisions via their need to analyse every possible element and eventuality. Despite possible negative images, Athenia is respected and rightfully feared in the Greek realm as they have the largest number of citizens (bar none) and the largest lands. They are also almost entirely self-sufficient in resources and would have the strongest military might simply through numbers. For the same reason, Athenia is also the home of some of the richest families in Greece: specifically Stravos and Xanthos. As such, Athenia holds much power internationally, within the realm of Greece.
[attr="class","enc_line"] | The Capitol | [attr="class","enc_line"] |
The capitol of Athenia (a city of the same name) is situated on the top edge of the Athenian cliffside coast, in its first bay, south of the northernmost cape. It is a sprawling city, built in organised concentric circles, beginning at the royal palace and expanding outwards. North of the royal manor lie the provinces of Athenia, the palace braced against the city's northern wall. From there, rings of settlements of different levels of society and wealth fan out all the way to the cliffside and out to the west. The Palace, the royal residences and the homes and merchants of the excessively wealthy can be found in the Inner Circle of Athenia. Whilst the lower levels of society, the public services and any structures that require excessive space (such as the Arena) occupy the furthest ring - the Outer Circle - at the very edges of the city.
Despite the distinction of social class in the location of the citizens homes, Athenia is one of the most well built cities in Greece, offering homes of stone to nearly all its civilians, no matter their social rank. All Athenians to live within the capitol have sturdy and dependable roofs over their heads. One of the largest problems in the Outer Circle, due to this, however, is over-crowding. For with walls of rock around the city, there is little space to build still further residences without encroaching on the province lands of the nobility. As such, many homes in the Outer Circle - while sturdy and safe against the climate - are the safe haven of too many people for them to truly support. As such, the very lower classes and poverty stricken citizens of the capitol have greater concerns with illness than they do with food or shelter.
A long and winding road, carved from the rock into a wide and safe thoroughfare, leads from the Outer Circle, down the face of the cliffs and to the Athenian harbour below, where dozens of wooden docks stretch out into the Aegean to support the busy sea-faring industry of the kingdom. Here, at sea level, there is still more land and more buildings for those who work and live on the sea. These are also build strongly and well, and put other kingdoms with their wooden structures and limited living options to shame.

Athenia holds the largest area of lands and therefore the largest populace in all of Greece. The lands are generally good in climate and free of natural disaster. There are no volcanic areas in Athenia and limited mountainous regions. The land is generally split between open meadows or tended fields and the forests of the northern provinces. Athenians are great lovers of their land and of industry, meaning that they have strict policies on how the land is cared for, what it is used for and how the forests or earth that is used by the people are replenished for future business and industry. As such, Athenians are often tied up in the red tape of procedure and protocol and have one of the busiest Senates in the realm due to all of the issues and infractions this naturally causes.

Sub-Exports: Reeds, dates, fruits, goat's milk.
Barony: Open
Population: 5,300
Military Unit: The Sea Roamers
Description: A small, sleepy fishing village, Loclis's fisherman are strong and courageous. While not as dangerous as the waters in Epistic, Loclis's location next to Elisaea puts it right in the middle of the whale's migration path - and the people of Loclis are not afraid to put that to good use. For the rest of the year however, they are content with the shellfish that they have in abundance in their waters.
Main Export: Fish
Sub-Exports: Shellfish, whale oil, rowboats and dingies.
Barony: Elias of Stravos
Population: 4,500
Military Unit: The Hydra's Men
Description: Up until very recently the poorest and most backwards of the Stravos baronies, Lyncestia saw its fortunes unexpectedly improve as it came under management of Lord Elias of Stravos. While not quite remarked for its fertile lands or bountiful grounds, Lyncestia does however boast a significant amount of protected coves and easily-defensible bays which constitute the ideal setting for ship-building sites. It was through this route that the Stravos heir chose to develop his barony, turning the province into a hub of the Stravos naval industry, ruled from its blood-red castle on the cliffs.

Sub-Exports: Shellfish, carpentry, swords.
Barony: Dastros of Nikolaos
Population: 2,800
Military Unit: The Waves of Wrath

Main Export: Fish
Sub-Exports: Octopus, tapestries, utensils and homeware.
Barony: Open
Population: 3,700
Military Unit: The Red Hands

Life in Mesnia is unpredictable however, with its a prevalent sense of unease as they have managed to get their hands on opium and other herbs that - rumor has it - induces enticing visions.
Main Export: Grain
Sub-Exports: Fruit, vegetables, wine.
Barony: Open
Population: 5,200
Military Unit: The Hearts of Messaly
Description: With a major export of alcoholic goods, the province is known to be home to some of the "freer spirited" in the kingdom. The people of Messaly are rumoured to all be drunkards, with loose men and even looser women. However, despite the reputation of constant celebrations, they manage to be one of the most successful provinces in the kingdom, standing among the wealthiest in all of Greece. The atmosphere is warm, and many often joke that the province should belong to Taengea.
Main Export: Wine
Sub-Exports: Fruit, barley, vines, reeds.
Barony: Open
Population: 4,400
Military Unit: The Rangers
Description: A port town that was once proliferate and abundant, now a sense of danger hangs around the province ever since pirates began to favor this destination for their ships to come in. The province has high risks for violence, with the locals of the province scurrying away in fear of any unfamiliar faces, for fear of being taken away to be part of the slave trade by the pirates. There have been few instances to get rid of the pirates from the province, however none have been successful. The fruit farms while once successful, are now under the control of the pirates who undercut the farmers in the province, to take their produce for themselves.
Main Export: Peaches
Sub-Exports: Fruit, textiles, clothing.
Barony: Open
Population: 7,200
Military Unit: The Grim Knives
Description: Bumpy with all of its hills, Piessis makes an excellent herding province. In a recent census, it was found that there are more sheep in the land than people who reside in it. Most residents find work in the textile industry or aiding the militia. While many would believe the countryside-esque province to be peaceful in nature, with a lackadaisical landscape and serene pastures, Piessis is one of the most violent places in all of Athenia, and its militia is second to none.
Main Export: Textiles
Sub-Exports: Fabric, clothing, woven baskets.
Barony: Rafail of Marikas
Population: 2,900
Military Unit: The Murder of Crows
Description: The small town of Thesnia prides itself on a very 'hands on' approach when it comes to dealing with their livestock and produce. The locals are humble but proud of their work, and there is a beautiful sense of satisfaction and home every year during the birthing season of their livestock. Many have chosen this small landlocked town as a retirement home as they grow older, resulting in Thesnia having a very high ratio of older residents to young ones, making it difficult for farmers to find young help.
Main Export: Meat
Sub-Exports: Fruit, grain.

Due to the suspicious circumstances surrounding his grandfather's death, many argue that Alehandros should have inherited the crown as soon as he became old enough to accept it. Raised mostly by nannies and caretakers after his mother remarried, however, Alehandros has little ambition to be king and, instead, dotes on the first family he's had to know and love. While an arranged marriage, his relationship with his wife is one of love and respect and his daughters come first in his thoughts, always.

Betrothed to the next king of Athenia, only to find that his crown was passed down a different line of the family, Sotiria is naturally frustrated at her role in Court. Sanasa is a confident and headstrong girl as many oldest siblings tend to be. Determined to only find the best possible suitor for her marriage - and so to avoid being outdone by her younger sisters - she uses her own spiky personality to test the patience and strength of characters of every man presented to her. While her mother finds this an embarrassing and childlike endeavour, Sanasa's father is supportive of her reasons if doubtful of her methods.

Lacides' line of the Antonis family is a military one. Like his father and grandfather before him, Lacides is a ranking General in the Athenian army. The honour, respect and awe due to a man with so many victories on the battlefield is given him every time he appears in Court or the Senate and his sons show him the same in their following of his footsteps. A hard man, with military, precision thinking and clear beliefs in right and wrong, he has only been swayed to an injust action once in his life with his sister's maid Amalia.

Never does he allow his emotions to cloud his judgement on the battlefield but his skill and provision in warcraft tend to make him easy to provoke and incite into a duel. The strong sense of justice passed down to him by his father occurs in him through a desire to punish and chastise those who are weak enough to falter. Far too beautiful for her station, Amalia worked as Lysta of Antonis's handmaiden since her childhood. Similar in age to her mistress, she was originally purchased as a friend and playmate to the noblewoman and then became part of Lysta's Court retinue. As she grew more beautiful, and Lacides's wife became ill and often bedridden, Amalia was sought out by Lacides. Helpless to his authority, courage and aura, Amalia fell madly in love with the marriage General. The tryst lasted only long enough to conceive a son and, with evidence of the affair on public display, Amalia was dismissed from the House of Antonis and now lives in the city as a seamstress. TakenArrogant, conceited and in love with his high-class position of brother-in-law (once removed) to the king, Rafail is the epitome of a spoiled prince. Moderately skilled in combat and academia, Rafail has enough skills and knowledge to wow the local brothel girls and the more gullible ladies of the noble Houses on a more than regular basis. The only female that he treats with a modicum of respect is his sister Sofia.
Some might deem the second son in such a powerful family to be of little use: Rafail of Marikas would beg to differ. Raised almost entirely by a series of obsequious nursemaids to one day be married back into the royal line and return the throne to House Marikas; over-generously spoiled and incomparably vain, he has always been far more interested in pursuing a life of pleasure than attending to any pressing matters. After all, why should one such as he - with such a close connection to the reigning monarch - bother himself with the problems of the peasantry when there are all the privileges of the world and his position to explore? His status as Baron of Thesnia, as far as he is concerned, is not one for political purpose but rather one for impressing the ladies of the courts and night alike. Any significant decisions, well, those can be easily left to his father and brother, who are all too happy to leave him as a puppet and an additional Marikas seat in the Senate. That isn't to say he doesn't make his own decisions on the future of his province every so often; however, they aren't usually for the good of the people: selflessness does not Rafail make.
But hedonism cannot rule the rest of his life. Now in his late twenties, Rafail finds his father attempting to force marriage upon him, eyeing any eligible woman from an influential family as a future bride, despite rocky relations. After failed attempts at wooing either Xanthos princess, the man is beginning to lose all interest in a fixed marriage, especially if the future does not appear to hold the power he or his father desires, and instead plans to spend his time in as many beds as he wishes. At the end of the day, getting what he desires is what Rafail does best.

TakenYoung, nubile and probably more intelligent than both of her siblings combined, Danae has taken after her father's side of the family. An avid learner, ambitious and greedy for success, she is smart enough to use her innocence and charms to con those whom she wants something from. Already a rebellious little entrepreneur, gambler and economist, she is close to her father and enjoys watching him work more than any other past-time.
At first glance, Danae appears to be little more than a quiet, demure girl with a thirst for learning that no library can seem to quench. Never one to show a temper or draw attention to herself in other demeaning ways; she appears to be the ideal debutante of the Athenian court and daughter of the House of Stravos. Unassuming. Agreeable. Virtuous. A picture perfect example of how the child the richest man in the kingdom, and the niece of a king, should behave.
This is the image that Danae of Stravos presents to the world because this is who she thinks that they need to see. Otherwise, how else would she make the other side of her, the true side of her, utterly unbelievable? After all, you'd have to be insane to believe that this depiction of Danae is hiding a girl with ambitions to put her own bloodline on the throne and is concerning herself with the business of economics, traditionally a man's concern, in order to get herself there?
Though truth be told, Danae does a little bit more than just merely concern herself with it, though. Instead, she's knee-deep in the thick of it, running her own little financial empire in the city. She's spent years learning how to do so from her father, who showed her everything she needed to know in all the business meetings he lets her attend. Now she specializes in gambling by using court gossip to her advantage, charging high interests on small loans, investing in smaller businesses that only locals seem to notice, and charging for her family's favor, which is her personal favorite. All of this is done by proxy of course and no one but her immediate family knows how successful she is.
Even then, they don't really know how influential this seemingly innocent little girl is becoming.
However, just beneath the surface, there is another side to Danae that she refuses to let anyone see, even herself. Beneath the power and prestige, she's truly just an insecure girl. She's aware of what's happening around her and how it can affect her. Danae has noticed that her sister, who is known for her beauty as well as their father's wealth, is nearly 10 years her senior and yet, is unmarried with no betrothal in sight. What does that mean for her younger sister with political ambitions that depend on her eventually getting a good match? And the gods only knew how many of her father's business partners would suggest that she had no place in their meetings? What if they were right?
Every day she worries that someone will discover what she's doing and expose that she's breaking the social order by doing something typically reserved for men. She could be disgraced and all her dreams of making her family, her father, proud of her would go up in smoke. Danae cannot let that happen. She'll do anything to protect her secret business and who knows, maybe one day her connections could get her just a step closer to her ultimate goal; the crown of Athenia.

TakenHeir to the throne of Athenia, were the law to change and allow females to inherit in the same way as men, Persephone has been raised with all the education, grace and poise that is expected of a princess. She has also had the good fortune to be incredibly beautiful. Considered a Goddess on earth, Persephone is widely regarded as the most beautiful female in the Athenian noble families and regularly receives the undying love devotions from nobles, courtiers and foreign officials.
The first daughter of King Minas and Queen Lucille of Athenia, Persephone was born into an already colourful legacy. The newest House to be considered as of royal rank within the kingdom, and yet the one currently occupying the throne, the authority and novelty of the House of Xanthos was at a precarious balance even before she was born female. Such events happen, and first born girls have never been a problem in the past, until her sister was born... and then her mother passed on to the netherworld. While Persephone had always known of the genuine love and affection to have grown within her father for her mother, over the years, she had no realised the significance of that loyalty until she breeched the age of ten - a year after her mother's death. From a young age, Persephone had been tutored in the ways of the world and her kingdom as any princess was - be they first born or not. She was educated to understand the political structure, the economic balance sheet and the social and cultural expectations of both herself and her people. She was encouraged to attend public events, be seen by the populace as the beautiful Athenian princess, daughter of the great King, and to impress upon the capital city that she was an important and significant addition to the royal history of their kingdom.
Yet, after the death of her mother Lucille, followed by rumour of a disastrous affair with an unknown noble woman on the part of her father, her tutors were suddenly changed. Unable to convince himself into another romance for the sake of his legacy, King Minas had already set plans in motion to start a change in the law that would allow him to never again feel the weight of his lack of son and heir. He would have his daughter become that heir. The scholars suddenly provided for Persephone's education were masters in their craft. The Masters of Law, War, Coin and Trade were all employed for private sessions, in amongst her already tabled curriculum. Her lessons in dance, music and theatre were suddenly removed from her weekly routine, to be replaced with visits to the Senate alongside her father (an awkward and uncomfortable affair in which every male set of eyes judged her for her presence) and the sudden leadership of the Athenian Court, which she held with the assistance of several more experienced ladies-in-waiting. Her education had become an exercise in grooming. Grooming for a leadership position that all of history and tradition was going to fight her for, tooth and nail.
Now, over ten years on and Persephone is a respected and honoured Princess. She is widely considered to be highly intelligent, world-wise and to have a grasp of political intrigues and procedure that was normally only cultivated in the experiences of women far older than her twenty-two years. She is, however, in the eyes of the men at Senate, still the Princess, and the ailing health of her father has started to force an already awkward question of inheritance to the forefront of everyone's mind. Persephone is unchallenged as the perfect, elegant Princess. But could she ever be a Queen?

TakenEmilia is far less mature than her older sister. Not a natural scholar, she has often avoided her classes and, instead, revels in the life of being a princess. She often muses on her good luck to be born of royal blood but female, so she will never have the responsibility of ruling a country but is still a highly sought woman for marriage. She day-dreams of a future where she achieves the greatest unity possible but has a troublesome little habit of falling head over heels for any polite, good-looking man to come her way.
The youngest of two girls of House Xanthos, Princess Emilia loves her life as a princess. She has an eye for jewels, capable of discerning silk from wool with a single brush of her pinky, and would settle for no less then the best. Her desire to be adorned in all the frills of the mortal world has led many to believe Emilia to be shallow and a princess in every sense of the word but she really couldn't be bothered to correct them. She is forgiving but will not back down if you pick a fight with her. At a young age of sixteen, she is sensitive and easily picked apart but her strength is one of silence and resolve, for she can be as stubborn as an ox.
