Eirini was not a perfect mother, she knew this perhaps better than anyone and yet she could not claim this to be from a lack of love towards her daughters. On the contrary, she loved them far more deeply than she could ever truly put into words, how could she not? They may not have been the boys that herself and Fotios had wanted, nor possessed the ethereal beauty of their cousins, nor her own blessings by the goddess Hera, but they were each a part of herself and her husband, a physical manifestation of their love and adoration of one another.
It was the woman's selfishness that truly stunted her maternally, coupled a deeply rooted conceitedness that drove her own ambitions to further her own advancement within society... a trait that had stemmed from her childhood. She had experienced what it was like to live in the gutter and Eirini had no intention of ever returning there, little did she care that ambition was often a double edged sword.
Nevertheless, there were times where the maternal instinct within her did flourish and today happened to be one of those days.
Her good mood had been present from when she greeted the sunrise and continued on into the afternoon, inspiring her purchases as she perused the market stalls – fabrics, jewellery and perfumes, treats for them all and for Dafni, Eirini had even brought something extra home with her.
With a contended smile upon her lips, Eirini travelled the familiar path towards her daughter's room, knocking once before entering. "Afternoon, my treasure." The term of endearment a tell-tale sign of her jovial mood, if her smile had not been noted by her youngest. Perching upon the end of Dafni's bed, she patted the spot beside her and waited for her to join; once she had, Eirini lightly cupped her chin with her free hand and tilted her head up to look at her. "Now then, I know with all the marriage arrangements that are going on with your cousins you may feel a little..." She paused to consider her words. "...left out." Such was the unfortunate reality of being a daughter of Fotios and Eirini.
"But fret not, my little one and trust in your mother to do right by you and your sisters." As selfish as Eirini could be in her affections and her time, she did mean what she spoke. Their daughters futures may not have been her husbands priority, but Eirini wanted them to marry well and she was determined to see this desire come to fruition. "But you must have patience, alright? Anyway, I have got you something to help you pass the time." From the folds of her crimson himation, Eirini outstretched her other hand revealing a small tortoiseshell kitten. "Isn't she just precious?"
